Coil Coated Metal Chosen For World-Class Soccer Stadium

Custom Colors Provide Visual Cues and High Style

CLEVELAND, OHIO -- Coil coated aluminum was chosen to clad the first world-class soccer stadium in the United States: LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in Kansas City, KS. The modern sports facility features unique prepainted metal panels in four custom colors that celebrate the spirit of its team.

LIVESTRONG Sporting Park is clad with approximately 60,800 square feet of Alucobond Aluminum Composite Metal (ACM) in four custom colors including Willmer Blue, Gray, Pewter and Tucson Medium Gray. The team’s primary color is blue with the grays providing neutral tones to the palette. The colors serve as visual cues throughout the stadium. Concessions are framed in blue to highlight food areas. The suite fronts feature a different color on each level with an accent band on the exterior, which features all four colors. The east exterior of the stadium boasts a striking multi-colored checkered pattern of prepainted metal panels that compliment the multi-colored glass doors.

The prepainted Alucobond ACM panels are installed as cladding throughout the interior and exterior of the stadium, including entry portals, canopies, columns, concession stands, luxury suite fronts, scoreboard backs and interior decking.

According to the architect, Populous, a sport architecture firm based in Kansas City, MO, the goal of the design was to incorporate the best of the European soccer stadium design while also giving it a genuine American feel. The stadium reflects the current day, unlike some baseball stadiums that have been designed in recent years that reflect a past era.

Opened in June 2011, the $200-million LIVESTRONG Sporting Park is home to Kansas City’s Major League Soccer (MLS) team. The state-of-the-art 340,000 square-foot stadium features a 75-yard by 120-yard playing field with a natural grass surface that includes an under-soil heating and moisture system. Fans enjoy 18,500 seats, 36 luxury suites and five clubs.

According to the National Coil Coating Association, prepainted metal is a unique building material increasingly specified by architects in both commercial and residential architectural designs. Coil coating is a superior process for cleaning, treating, and painting metal before fabrication. In one continuous process a coil of metal is unwound, cleaned, chemically treated, primed, top coated, rewound and readied for shipment. Architects specify prepainted metal because of its high durability, consistent quality, low cost, design flexibility, and green properties, which can help earn LEED certification points. Construction is also fast compared to other materials, saving labor costs. Perhaps best of all, prepainted metal can help architects achieve distinctive looks without exceeding the budget.
